Joseph II issued this coin as part of his sweeping administrative reforms across the Habsburg Netherlands, which included Luxembourg. His centralizing policies — suppressing monasteries, restructuring provincial governance, and imposing uniform currency — provoked deep resistance across the Low Countries and contributed directly to the Brabant Revolution of 1789. This sol was among the last coinage issued with his authority intact before that revolt unraveled Habsburg control of the region entirely.
