Issued as part of Peru's ongoing "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" commemorative circulation series, this coin honors the Titicaca water frog (Telmatobius culeus), a fully aquatic species endemic to Lake Titicaca at roughly 3,800 meters elevation. The species absorbs oxygen directly through its heavily folded skin — an adaptation to the lake's cold, oxygen-poor water. By 2019, population surveys had documented catastrophic declines driven by water contamination and overharvesting for supposed medicinal use, placing the frog on the IUCN critically endangered list.
