Issued to mark the 250th anniversary of Humboldt's birth, this is one of several commemoratives the BCR Peru has produced honoring figures with deep ties to the Andes. Humboldt spent 1802 in Peru and Ecuador, ascending Chimborazo to what was then the highest recorded altitude reached by any person — a feat he used to develop his concept of vegetation zones, arguably the founding idea of modern biogeography.
