Geneva's cantonal coinage authority was winding down by 1817 — the Federal Pact of 1815 had restored the old cantons but left monetary matters fragmented, and Swiss federal coinage unification was still decades away. This billon issue belongs to Geneva's last sustained period of independent coin production before federal standardization eventually rendered cantonal types obsolete. The 6-denier subdivision reflects a pre-decimal accounting system Geneva retained long after neighboring states had begun abandoning it.
