Geneva struck billon small change in the years immediately following its formal admission into the Swiss Confederation in 1815, a political transition that left the canton managing its own coinage while federal monetary unification remained decades away. The 1819 Sol sits in that window of cantonal independence — after the Napoleonic reorganization had dissolved the old Helvetic Republic but before the 1850 Federal Coinage Act stripped individual cantons of their minting authority entirely.

The HMZ reference distinguishes at least two die variants for this type, catalogued separately as KM#119 and KM#119a.
