Geneva's cantonal coinage authority had a narrow window after the city-state's 1815 admission to the Swiss Confederation — federal monetary unification was already a political inevitability, and cantons scrambled to issue their own types before Bern consolidated control. The 1817 billon sol sits near the tail end of Geneva's independent minting activity. The billon composition itself reflects chronic silver shortages that plagued Swiss cantons through the Napoleonic aftermath, when metal stocks had been systematically drained by French requisitions.
The KM#116 and 116a distinction traces to minor die differences documented by Hürlimann.
