Aanvullende informatie

Geneva's billon Sol issues of the 1780s were struck during a period of acute political instability in the republic — the same years that saw the Genevan Revolution of 1782, when Bernese and French troops intervened to restore patrician oligarchic control after a popular uprising by the *natifs* and *habitants* classes. The restored conservative government resumed normal civic administration, including coinage, but the social tensions that had produced the revolt were never resolved, and Geneva's independent republican status would survive only until 1798, when French annexation ended the city-state's mint operations entirely.
