The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú was founded in 1917 by the Jesuit priest Jorge Dintilhac and remains the oldest private university in the country. Its relationship with the Vatican has not always been smooth — in 2011, the Holy See moved to strip the university of its "Pontifical" designation in a prolonged dispute over institutional autonomy and control of its endowment, a conflict that remained unresolved at the time this coin was issued.
