Andorra issued this coin in 1980 under a constitutional arrangement dating to 1278, when the Treaty of Pareage divided feudal sovereignty over the valleys between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix — a co-principality structure that survived intact into the modern era. Joan Martí i Alanis held the Episcopal Co-Prince role from 1971 until 2003, making him one of the longest-serving holders of that office in the arrangement's seven-century history.
