Andorra issued its first domestic coinage only in 1976, after centuries of operating almost entirely without native-struck money — transactions had long been conducted in French francs and Spanish pesetas under the diarchic arrangement shared between the French head of state and the Bishop of Urgell. Joan Martí i Alanis, who held the episcopal co-princeship from 1971 to 2003, appears on this early issue as one of two sovereign authorities, a feudal structure dating to the 1278 Paréage agreement between the Count of Foix and the Bishop of Urgell.
The .918 gold fineness follows the old crown gold standard rather than the more common .900 used by most 20th-century bullion issues.
