Christian IV's small billon issues of this period were struck under persistent pressure on the royal treasury, largely driven by his aggressive foreign policy ambitions and the costs of maintaining Danish naval supremacy in the Baltic. The skilling denominations absorbed whatever silver could be scraped into alloy, hence the unusually low fineness — billon this lean borders on copper coinage in practical terms.
