Christian III, who had consolidated Lutheran Protestantism as Denmark-Norway's state religion by royal decree in 1537, used the coinage of the 1540s partly as an instrument of administrative unification. Norway at this point had been reduced from a kingdom to a Danish province in all but name — a demotion formalized in 1536 — and the skilling issues of this period reflect the currency standardization that followed.
