(Translation: Charles, by God's grace Emperor of the Romans, King of Spain, Duke of Gelderland)
Reverse description A quartered heraldic shield bearing the arms of Austria-Burgundy, surmounted by an imperial crown and flanked by elaborate foliate or floral ornaments in the field, the whole set upon a long cross whose arms extend to the circumferential legend. The quarters display the characteristic horizontal bars of Austria and the lion of Burgundy, with an escutcheon at the base of the shield. The surrounding Latin legend DA · MIHI VIRTVTE CO · HOST ES · TVOS encircles the entire device, invoking divine strength against enemies. The execution is typical of the Netherlandish hammered coinage tradition of the mid-16th century, with strong relief on the heraldic elements contrasting with the flat, irregular flan.
