| 正面描述 | Bearded and armored bust of Emperor Charles V facing right, wearing an elaborate imperial crown, within a raised inner circle. The effigy depicts the emperor in richly detailed plate armor with a fur-trimmed mantle visible at the shoulder, rendered in the high-relief style characteristic of Flemish Renaissance coinage. The surrounding legend reads CAROLVS D G ROM IMP HISP REX DVX BVRG C F, distributed around the full circumference of the coin, with the abbreviated titles identifying him as Holy Roman Emperor, King of Spain, Duke of Burgundy, and Count of Flanders. |

| 背面描述 | The quartered coat of arms of Austria-Burgundy, surmounted by an imperial crown, is displayed prominently in the center of the field, incorporating the arms of Castile-León, Burgundy, Austria, and Flanders, with the inescutcheon of Flanders at the base. The crowned shield is flanked on either side by elaborate foliate or fleur-de-lis terminals extending from a floriated cross whose arms radiate outward to the inner border. The surrounding legend DA MIHI VIRTVTE CO HOSTES TVOS encircles the design, reading 'Give me strength against your enemies,' a pious Carolingian motto appropriate to the emperor's ambitions. |

The Karolusgulden was introduced by Charles V's 1543 monetary ordinance for the Low Countries, an attempt to impose currency uniformity across his Netherlandish territories at a moment when trade demand for reliable silver coinage was outpacing supply. Flanders was among the most commercially active mints in the Habsburg network, and the guilder struck there circulated heavily through Antwerp's exchange markets.
Charles suspended the issue in 1548 as part of broader monetary reforms ahead of the Pragmatic Sanction, which reorganized the Seventeen Provinces into a unified administrative bloc — a move that also standardized coinage policy across them.
