Piedforts — struck at double or greater thickness on standard-diameter flans — were not produced for circulation. In the Dutch Republic, they functioned as presentation pieces, proof-of-die records, or gifts to visiting dignitaries, and were typically produced in very small numbers immediately following a new die's preparation. Zeeland's mint at Middelburg had the authority to strike such pieces, and the province exercised that right selectively.
The 1659–1660 date range suggests production across a mint year boundary, a known occurrence when dies were carried over without replacement.
