West Friesland's silver ducats of this period were struck under the authority of the provincial States rather than the Dutch Republic centrally, reflecting the genuine autonomy each of the Seven Provinces maintained over their own coinage. The klippe format — square-struck rather than round — combined with piedfort weight at one-and-a-half times standard suggests presentation or proof-of-die purpose rather than circulation intent. Such pieces were commonly produced as diplomatic gifts or for assay verification.
The 1661–1662 window coincides with the First stadtholderless period, when Holland's regents had effectively suppressed Orange influence across most provinces. West Friesland, as a quarter of Holland rather than a separate province, had its coinage affairs closely tied to the Amsterdam financial machinery.
