Rama IV — known in the West primarily through the distorted lens of The King and I — was in practice a serious modernizer who had spent 27 years as a Buddhist monk studying Western science before ascending the throne in 1851. The flat, machine-struck coinage he introduced in the 1860s was a direct response to pressure from British trading partners who found traditional bullet coins (pod duang) impossible to count and verify at scale. This brass issue occupied the fractional end of that transitional currency system.
The thick planchet variety is distinct from the thinner striking of the same type and period — a production inconsistency rather than an intentional denomination split.
