Rama V — Chulalongkorn — came to the throne in 1868 inheriting a monetary system that was still partly built around the bullet-shaped pod duang coinage used for centuries. The flat, round copper issues introduced during his reign were a deliberate modernization, part of a broader administrative overhaul meant to signal Siam's alignment with Western monetary conventions at a moment when both Britain and France were pressing hard on the kingdom's borders.
The Royal Siamese Mint was established with British technical assistance, and early production runs like this 1876 issue show the learning curve in die preparation — surface irregularities and uneven edge treatment are common and period-specific, not damage.
