| Obverse description | Six kanji characters arranged in three rows of two, inscribed in relief within a plain rectangular field enclosed by a beaded (pearl) border running along all four edges of the irregular hammered planchet. The inscription reads vertically from right to left, conveying the exchange rate guarantee of sixteen shu to one ryō. The textured, granular field surface is characteristic of Edo-period hammered silver coinage produced at the Ginza. |
