Tibet's coinage during this period was struck under a dual-authority arrangement formalized after the Gurkha invasions of 1788 and 1791, when Qing military intervention gave Beijing considerably more leverage over Lhasa's affairs. The 1793 reforms imposed by the Qing required Tibetan coins to carry the Jiaqing reign title, embedding imperial nomenclature into local currency whether the Kashag government welcomed it or not. Production was handled by Tibetan moneyers, which accounts for the considerable variation in execution across this series — C#83.3 being one of several cloud-pattern variants distinguished primarily by the arrangement of the six-character obverse inscription.
