Additional information

The Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek shilling was produced at the Pretoria Mint, which the Kruger government established in 1892 specifically to end the republic's dependence on imported coinage — a significant political priority for a state sitting atop the Witwatersrand gold fields yet unable to control its own monetary supply. The Berlin firm Otto Noll & Co. supplied the original minting machinery.

Production ran until 1897, just two years before the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War rendered the entire series obsolete. Circulation examples saw hard use in the mining camps of the Rand.
