Somalia's 1 Shilling denomination has been effectively worthless in real economic terms for decades — the Somali shilling collapsed alongside the central government in 1991 and has seen no meaningful monetary policy since. These stainless steel issues from 2019 were produced not for domestic circulation but for the novelty collector market, a pattern common among nominal or failed-state issuers licensing their sovereignty to foreign mint operators.
The Yak-1 was the Soviet Union's first successful indigenous fighter of World War II, entering service in 1940 after Aleksandr Yakovlev's design bureau beat out competing proposals under direct Stalinist pressure.
