Reverse description Cruciform arrangement of four crowned shields bearing the royal arms of England, Scotland, Ireland, and France, with the combined arms of Nassau at the centre intersection. Each shield is crowned and separated by ornate sceptre-like interstitial devices. The date 1697 is divided across the top of the cross, flanked by the legend. The peripheral Latin legend reads MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX, denoting William's titles as King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland. The mintmark 'B' for Bristol is visible at the bottom of the reverse, consistent with the branch mint coinage of the Great Recoinage period.
