1 Shilling - The New Zealand Commercial Exchange Co

The New Zealand Commercial Exchange Company Limited was not a bank. It operated as a commercial trading exchange, and its decision to issue bearer scrip in shilling denominations placed it in legally ambiguous territory — the Banking Act restrictions of the period applied to deposit-taking institutions, and exchange companies sometimes exploited that gap to issue circulating instruments without a full banking licence.

Printed locally rather than through one of the established London security printers favoured by New Zealand's chartered banks, the note reflects a domestic production chain that was considerably less sophisticated. Local printing for circulating scrip of this denomination was unusual enough to raise contemporary eyebrows.

The company's operational window of 1898–1901 was brief.
