Philip and Mary's joint coinage was the direct result of the marriage treaty of 1554, which required Philip's name and titles to appear alongside Mary's on English coin — a political concession that caused considerable friction in Parliament, where many members feared it implied Philip held sovereign authority over England. The treaty explicitly stated he did not, but the coinage told a different story to anyone handling it in daily commerce.

Spink 2501A is the facing busts variety, distinguishable from the profile type. Philip's English titles were curtailed after Mary's death in November 1558, rendering the joint coinage immediately obsolete.
