Obverse description Conjoined busts of Philip II of Spain and Mary I of England facing one another in profile, Philip to the left and Mary to the right, both uncrowned, with a single imperial crown suspended above the junction of their effigies. The Roman numeral date mark appears in the left field. A Latin legend runs continuously around the periphery, separated by stops, identifying the two monarchs as joint rulers of England.

Reverse description A large quartered royal shield of arms, combining the arms of England and France (lions passant guardant and fleurs-de-lis) impaled with the arms of Spain (castle and lion of Castile and León), surmounted by a crown. The shield is flanked by elaborate foliate or scroll supporters on either side. A Latin legend encircles the design, invoking divine protection, separated by stops.
