| 背面描述 | The reverse field is entirely occupied by seven lines of text in the central area, listing the names of the six issuing Newark merchants: T STANSALL, CHA MOOR, RICH FISHER, WM FILLINGHAM, WM READETT, AND, T. WILSON. A circular peripheral legend reads THE CURRENT VALUE · PAYABLE IN CASH NOTES, running continuously around the outer border, separated from the central text by a plain inner ring. The overall typographic layout is characteristic of the engraving style of Thomas Halliday of Birmingham. |

Newark's 1811 shilling belongs to the broader wave of provincial silver tokens issued when the Napoleonic Wars drained official coinage from everyday commerce — the Royal Mint simply could not keep pace with demand, and merchants across the Midlands filled the gap through private arrangement. The six Newark tradesmen named on this piece pooled their guarantee to give the token credibility in local exchange.
Parliament suppressed these silver token issues in 1812, rendering the Newark pieces obsolete within roughly a year of striking.
