Uganda's first post-independence coinage was introduced in 1966, replacing the East African shilling that had circulated across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda under a shared colonial currency board. The non-magnetic copper-nickel composition distinguishes this type from a later issue — a detail that matters for sorting mixed lots but is not reflected in the catalog reference numbering.
Circulation through the early 1970s means many examples passed through Idi Amin's 1971 coup without interruption; the currency itself wasn't overhauled until inflation pressure forced a new series in the late 1970s.
