Mary Tudor's Irish coinage was struck under severe fiscal constraints — the Dublin Mint operated with inconsistent silver supplies throughout her reign, and the shillings produced in 1553–54 reflect that instability in their often debased flans. Spink 6495 is among the rarest of her Irish issues, with surviving examples frequently showing die clashes and misaligned strikes attributable to poorly maintained equipment at the Dublin facility.
Mary had restored the Irish mint's operating authority after a period of dormancy under Edward VI, partly to assert Catholic royal legitimacy in Ireland ahead of her marriage to Philip II of Spain.
