Additional information

Somaliland has issued its own coinage since 1994 despite remaining unrecognized by any UN member state. These shilling pieces are produced for the collector market rather than meaningful domestic circulation, and the pad-printing process — essentially a color transfer technique borrowed from industrial manufacturing — allows detailed polychrome imagery on steel blanks at low cost. The jabuticaba, a Brazilian tree that bears fruit directly on its trunk and branches, has no geographic or cultural connection to Somaliland whatsoever.
