Somaliland has issued its own currency since 1994 despite remaining unrecognized by any UN member state — the shilling circulates domestically but holds no international standing. The Hoatzin is native to South American wetlands, which makes its appearance on a Somaliland coin an unusual curatorial choice with no obvious regional connection.
