The design is characteristic of the provincial silver token coinage produced during the monetary shortages of the Napoleonic Wars period, making use of a previously engraved die associated with Lincoln. |

Andover's commercial token issues of 1812 arrived during the acute small-change famine that followed the Bank of England's suspension of cash payments in 1797 — a crisis that left provincial trade chronically starved of silver. Millson and Preston issued under the Wakeford's imprint, a practice common among traders who co-sponsored token series to distribute issuance costs. At the shilling denomination in silver, this piece sits at the upper end of what provincial issuers typically risked in metal value, making over-redemption a genuine commercial concern.
Davis Hampshire #12 is not among the commoner Hampshire silver tokens to survive.
