Virginia never actually adopted an official colonial coinage, and this 1714 Gloucester shilling pattern is one of the most contentious pieces in American numismatics — long debated as either a genuine colonial-era proposal or a later fabrication. The brass composition and the "Gloucester" attribution link it to speculation about a private merchant token scheme in Gloucester County, but no documentary record of an authorizing body has ever surfaced.
Fewer than a handful of examples are known to exist.
