The removal of "IND:IMP" — Indiae Imperator, Emperor of India — from the obverse inscription followed Indian independence in 1947 and the subsequent republic declaration in 1950, which severed the last formal imperial tie. Australia's coinage was slow to reflect this: the modified obverse didn't appear until the 1950 issue, three years after the fact. George VI died in February 1952, making the run for this type extremely short.
