The date 1952 is divided by the palm trunk in the lower central field, with the word TRIAL stamped to the right of the trunk above the date. The outer legend BRITISH WEST AFRICA arcs across the top, and ONE SHILLING curves along the bottom, with dot stops separating the elements. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

By 1952, British West Africa's currency board was actively exploring stainless steel as a replacement for the cupro-nickel then in use, anticipating the independence movements that would shortly render the entire series obsolete. This trial was never adopted. Ghana's independence in 1957 dissolved the common currency arrangement, and the colonial shilling series ended before any new composition could be introduced into circulation.
