The East Africa Currency Board, established in 1919, operated as a shared monetary authority across British Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika, and Zanzibar — an arrangement that kept currency policy firmly in London's hands rather than any local administration. By 1948, copper-nickel had replaced the earlier cupro-nickel and silver alloys as postwar metal shortages and cost pressures reshaped colonial coinage across the empire.
This series ran into the early 1950s, overlapping with the accelerating independence movements that would eventually dissolve the Currency Board entirely by 1966.
