The king is depicted wearing the Imperial State Crown and robes of state adorned with decorative detail at the collar and chest. The surrounding legend reads GEORGIVS V D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP: in raised Latin lettering, distributed around the full circumference of the coin. The portrait exhibits strong, high-relief modelling characteristic of Mackennal's official coinage effigy as adopted from 1911. The obverse serves as a trial striking to evaluate the obverse design prior to adoption for British West African coinage.
