The legend EAST AFRICA arcs across the upper periphery outside the cartouche, while the denomination 1 SHILLING and the date appear in the lower field, the numeral 1 above the word SHILLING and the four-digit date below, all separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The composition evokes the colonial iconography of British East Africa, blending imperial heraldic tradition with an African natural setting.
