George IV's first portrait shilling was issued the year of his coronation, following nearly a decade of serving as Prince Regent while his father George III remained incapacitated. The new coinage was part of a broader recoinage program — the first serious effort since 1816 to rationalize British silver after wartime disruption had driven coin hoarding and left the country relying heavily on countermarked Spanish dollars and bank tokens.
The first reverse was retired after a single year. By 1823 the design had been revised, making 1821 the only year this specific obverse-reverse pairing circulated.
