The first and fourth quarters bear the three passant guardant lions of England, the second quarter the lion rampant of Scotland, the third quarter the fleur-de-lis of France, and the lower-left quarter the Irish harp. The date 1774 appears above the crown, and the legend VIRGINIA. 1774 is distributed to either side of the shield. |

Virginia's 1774 coinage was authorized by the colonial government to address a chronic shortage of small change, with the dies cut in London and the coins struck at the Tower Mint. The shilling pattern was never formally issued for circulation — the outbreak of hostilities in 1775 rendered the entire project moot before distribution could begin.
Most surviving examples descend from a small group believed to have been retained as specimens rather than released. PCGS has certified only a handful across all grade levels.
