Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state, making its coinage a legal curiosity — functional domestically, invisible internationally. These aluminium shillings circulate alongside the Somaliland shilling banknotes issued by the Bank of Somaliland, in an economy where mobile money platforms like Zaad have largely displaced physical small change altogether.
