| Reverse description | A quartered shield of arms — displaying the arms of England and France quarterly — is superimposed over a cross fourchée, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The heraldic composition is rendered in the bold, flat style characteristic of late Tudor hammered coinage. A mintmark appears at 12 o'clock, corresponding to that on the obverse. The circumferential legend POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV encircles the design, translating as 'I have made God my helper,' a personal motto of Elizabeth I. |
