Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any coins bearing his effigy entered circulation, making all dated 1936 pieces with his portrait patterns or proofs rather than issued currency. This shilling pattern is notable for a deliberate protocol breach: Edward insisted his effigy face left, breaking the centuries-old convention of alternating portrait directions between monarchs. Since George V had faced left, Edward should have faced right — he refused. When George VI succeeded, the directional convention was quietly restored.
