| Obverse description | Rectangular incuse countermark applied to the triangular silver piece, bearing the legend TORTOLA in bold, raised Latin capital letters across the field. The countermark is punched into the surface of the cut section, with the inscription reading left to right across the broader face of the triangular flan. The piece itself is one-eighth of a Spanish colonial 8 Reales, cut to produce a fractional denomination for local circulation in the British Virgin Islands. The irregular, roughly triangular shape retains the cut edges of the parent coin, and the silver surface shows the characteristic texture of a manually applied stamp. This Type II countermark is distinguished by its rectangular punch form enclosing the island name. |
