| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device displays the quartered arms of the Commonwealth — the Cross of St. George impaled with the Irish harp — supported on either side by a winged angel whose outstretched arms hold the shield, the angel depicted with a youthful face and spread wings in high relief. The composition is framed by a rope-and-bead inner border. The circumferential legend, reading * GAVRDED · WITH · ANGELES · 1651, encircles the design, the date incorporated within the legend, and a single star marks the commencement point at the top. The engraving is attributed to Thomas Simon and represents a sophisticated pattern design intended to demonstrate the capabilities of milled coinage production at the Tower Mint. |
