Obverse description Octagonal hammered silver field bearing the crowned royal cypher 'CR' (Carolus Rex) at centre, rendered in bold relief beneath a simple crown. The cypher is surrounded by a beaded inner circle, with the Latin legend 'DVM SPIRO SPERO' (While I breathe, I hope) disposed around the circumference, separated by pellet stops. The design is characteristically irregular in strike, consistent with the improvised nature of siege coinage produced under duress at Pontefract Castle during the English Civil War.
