Group D shillings mark a transitional period in Nicholas Briot's influence on the Tower Mint — the 4th bust reflecting pressure from Briot's superior engraving methods imported from France, where he had served as chief engraver at the Paris Mint before defecting to England in 1625. The hammered coinage establishment resisted his techniques bitterly, and the uneasy compromise visible across this group is partly a product of that institutional friction.
