Zimbabwe has no historical or sovereign connection to the Bismarck, a German Kriegsmarine battleship sunk by the Royal Navy in May 1941. This piece belongs to a category of collector-targeted legal tender issued by countries with no mint infrastructure of their own — the denomination is nominal, the "shilling" has never circulated in Zimbabwe, and the coin was almost certainly struck by a private mint on contract. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has issued dozens of such novelty pieces since the collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar in 2009 rendered domestic monetary policy largely symbolic.
