Additional information

Somalia has issued numerous novelty-format shillings in recent decades through licensing arrangements with foreign minting agencies — Pobjoy Mint and others — producing colorized stainless steel pieces aimed squarely at the thematic collector market rather than domestic circulation. The Somali shilling as a functioning currency has been effectively displaced since the state's collapse in 1991, with the Central Bank of Somalia operating in name only for much of the intervening period.
