RAAF Officers' Mess chits occupy a genuinely odd corner of Australian notaphily — they were internal vouchers, not legal tender, issued by individual mess committees to manage bar and canteen accounts on base. This one from RAAF Headquarters is among the more senior-provenance examples of the type, given that HQ mess membership skewed toward staff officers rather than operational aircrew.

Survival rates are low. Most chits were redeemed, reconciled against mess accounts, and destroyed at the end of each accounting period. Any that escaped did so accidentally — found in uniform pockets, tucked into logbooks, or simply forgotten.
